# Update the Card on File for a Membership or Payment Plan

{% hint style="success" %}
**Go straight there:** [crowdwork.com/account/payment-methods](https://crowdwork.com/account/payment-methods)

If you're not signed in yet, you'll be asked to sign in first and then taken to the page.
{% endhint %}

If a card on your account expired, was cancelled or replaced by your bank, or a scheduled payment was declined, you can fix it yourself in about a minute. You don't need to contact the theatre, and you don't need to wait for anyone to reset anything.

## Add or Replace Your Card

The Payment Methods page groups your cards by theatre and by what each card is used for — **Payment Plans** and **Enrolled Memberships**. Find the heading for the theatre and the item you're fixing, then:

1. **If a card is already listed**, click **Replace Card** and enter the new card details. The old card is removed from that plan or membership at the same time.
2. **If no card is listed**, click **Add Card** and enter your card details. This is what you'll see if your previous card was deleted or your bank issued you a new number.

That's it — your next scheduled charge uses the new card automatically. You don't need to re-enter it anywhere else, and you don't need to tell the theatre you've done it.

## If the Page Looks Empty

{% hint style="warning" %}
**Seeing nothing at all on the Payment Methods page — no cards, no theatre headings, no buttons?** That is not something you can fix from your side. It usually means your purchase isn't yet connected to the account you're signed in to.

Please [contact CrowdWork support](/contacting-support.md) and mention that your Payment Methods page is empty. Include the email address you used when you bought your tickets or registered for your class — that's usually the piece that resolves it.
{% endhint %}

Two things worth checking before you reach out, because either one produces the same empty page:

* **Are you signed in with the right email address?** If you bought with one address and later created an account with another, your purchases live under the first one. Sign out and sign back in with the address on your confirmation email.
* **Do you actually have a recurring payment?** This page only lists cards attached to an active membership or payment plan. A one-off ticket purchase doesn't leave a card on file, so there's nothing to show — that's normal.

## Which Card Gets Charged

This works slightly differently for memberships and for payment plans, which is worth knowing if you're trying to rescue a payment that already failed.

* **Memberships** — the card used for the membership is tried first. If it can't be charged, we'll try any other card on your account, including one saved under a different heading.
* **Payment plans** — each plan is charged to the card saved for that plan, and we don't switch to a different card automatically. We try that same card three times, 24 hours apart. Replacing the card is therefore the fastest way to get a stuck payment through: the next attempt uses your new card.

{% hint style="danger" %}
**Add the new card before removing the old one.** Removing a card that's still attached to an active membership or payment plan can interrupt it. Add or replace first, then remove anything you no longer need.
{% endhint %}

You also can't remove a card while it has upcoming payments scheduled against it. Once every installment on a plan is complete, the card can be removed.

## If a Payment Already Failed

Update the card first, using the steps above. What happens next depends on what the payment was for:

* **A membership payment** retries automatically over the following few days and will pick up your new card.
* **A payment plan installment** that has already exhausted its three attempts is marked Failed, and the theatre is alerted. Once your new card is on file, contact the theatre and ask them to reschedule the failed installment — they can do that in a couple of clicks, but they can only do it after the card is updated.
